Camping Frequently Asked Questions

How often do we camp?
Almost every month we have some type of outdoor camping activity. You have to have the outing in a successful scouting program!!!
What are some of the places we have been in recent years?
USS Yorktown, Camp Bowers, Camp Raven Knob, Camp Daniel Boone, Uharrie Mountains, Applicaian Trail,
Philmont, Linville Gouge, "Rabon's Farm", Canoeing on Cape Fear River ….. from the mountains to the coast!!!
When do we leave and return?
On a typical campout, we leave the church at 5:30pm on Friday. We try to return on Sunday between 10:30 and 11:30am at the Haverty's Parking Lot in Landfall Center.
What does it cost for a camping trip?
On the Monday night meeting before a campout, each scout brings $10. to his patrol to cover the cost of food to be purchased. The money is given to the patrol member designated to buy the food for the campout. The scouts take turns buying the food for the campout. Several scouts from each patrol buy all the food that their patrol will eat on the campout. The scouts learn to use money wisely so that they will have plenty of food. If any money is left over, it is to be divided and returned to the scouts in the patrol. No refund is available if a scout opts to not go on a campout after the food has already been bought and paid for by his fellow patrol members.
Are parents welcome on campouts?
Absolutely!!! You are welcome anytime to any outdoor activity. You will camp and eat with the adult leaders (to date not a single person has lost weight on any of these campouts, so bring you appetite!) Food for the adults is normally purchased by one of the adult leaders. Your cost for the food is $10.00.
What do I do about prescriptions?
Any medication, prescribed or otherwise, should be given to the scoutmaster or designated leader in his absence prior to departure with detailed instructions.
Do we do a High Adventure activity?
Every year we try to plan a High Adventure Trip for the older scouts.  In the past we have gone to Philmont, Sea Base, and the AT.  The younger scouts spend a week in summer camp. For the past 2 years we have gone to Camp Bowers
Should I take money on every campout?
This is a personal decision. If the schedule includes a meal for the road each scout should bring enough money for his meal(s) If the schedule does not include a meal on the road then money is not required or encouraged.  However if a scout feels more comfortable with a little money, $2-3 dollars should be plenty just in case we stop at a convenience store or someplace interesting.
What do I need for camping supplies?
As a new member of the troop, and someone who is still growing, we advise you take some time to choose your camping gear. Don’t rush out and buy the first thing you like ----- odds are you’ll like something else someone brings on the next campout more.

You will need the following to start:

  • Your Scout Uniform and troop T-shirt!
  • Your Boy Scout Handbook
  • Sleeping bag (rated to 20 degrees)
  • Duffel bag (get the backpack when you have grown some more, or buy a pack that is expandable). REI, Cape Fear Outfitters, and Great Out Door Provisions are great places to look.  Also, some of the older boys may have back-packs for sale. (The may have out grown their first packs).
  • Sleeping pad (I would recommend something 72" long so you can grow into it) You can start with a $5.00 foam pad.
  • Canteen, anything from a liter bottle to one that attaches to your belt
  • Compass
  • Flashlight, small and lightweight (remember you have to carry all this stuff!)
  • Small box of matches in a waterproof container
  • Personal eating kit or a plastic bowl and utensils
  • Poncho or Ran Suit (A good one!)
  • Sturdy hiking boots, that have been broken in before the campout! (You can get a great pair at Wal Mart)
  • A pair of old tennis shoes
  • Several pairs of socks (wool in the winter along with sock liners)
  • Clothes (judge what to bring according to time of year, always pack one extra set of everything!)
  • Jacket / fleece (seasonal)
  • Insect Repellent (not in an aerosol can) and suntan lotion (seasonal)
  • Pocketknife (once you have your totin chip)
  • Toiletries (washcloth, soap in container, toothbrush, toothpaste, comb)
  • Personal First Aid kit
  • Towel
  • A disposable camera for you to record the memories that will last a lifetime. You will be glad to have these pictures later, especially when you reach the rank of Eagle and have documented your experiences through the years.

and that’s it!!!!

The following are forbidden - any of the things listed above will be confiscated and not returned and could result in suspension or dismissal from the troop!

Does the above list include stuff for summer camp?
No, that is a separate list, this is strictly for troop related campouts.
